From: Joe Murphy
To: GRP -City Council
Subject: No E9 Closure, No Service Cuts
Date: Monday, October 26, 2020 5:04:19 PM
Respective Council Members,
I have the unique position of being a San Carlos resident as well as an employee of your fire
department. I'm asking you to vote against the city manager's recommended budget cut to
my department. It is a true cut that will only hurt the communities I've sworn and spent nearly
14 years proudly serving. I am fortunate at my ability to have some insider information, but
am enraged that as a tax paying citizen of San Carlos, one in which contracts for fire service to
yours and my Redwood City Fire Department. There's been little to nothing passed along to
the residents paying for this contract and the significant change and potential delayed service
to myself and my family.
To not take any public input, no chance for anyone to vote, and no substantial reason provided
to me as an employee of the city is absurd. Today while speaking with and spending time one
on one with the citizens you were elected to represent, they expressed question and outrage
about the possibility of this coming to fruition and city leadership. They feel deceived by the
city, Measure RR's passing, and the general lack of information shared prior to a cut that will
no doubt affect tax paying residents, businesses, and companies that have chosen to call both
Redwood City and San Carlos home. Many topics such as the pandemic, growing homeless
problem, and wildfire concerns all have fueled a feeling of mistrust amongst the citizens I
spoke with today from 10:30-2.
I hope you will consider alternative options. As a member of your fire department, I am happy
to hear you are willing to talk with my union representatives and listen to our side.
Sincerely,
Joe Murphy
RCFD Engine 10, C -shift
Former Redwood City and current San Carlos resident and tax payer.
