This yard is bordered to the north and east by shrubs and trees. Closer to the house, the paved area changes from asphalt to large panels of aggregate divided into squares by wooden spacers. Closer still, this material gives way to small pavers of brick or cast stone. This brick area continues right up to the front of the house. Another landscaping feature is a tall fence that begins at the right -front corner of the house and runs around the east yard. It is made of vertical redwood siding, the same as the house and garage are covered with. A second, much smaller fence of the same material can be found within the east yard immediately adjacent to the house. This three -sided fence encloses a patio twelve feet square on the east side of the house. The effect of the landscaping in front of the house and on the east side is one of spaciousness, greenery, and privacy. Large areas are devoted to yards and the driveway, while shrubs and mature trees bordering these areas provide the greenery and privacy. Behind the house, a patio is paved with squares of aggregate bounded by wooden spacers. This patio is called a terrace in a landscaping plan. The nine to fifteen feet of the patio closest to the house is covered by the house's extended eaves. This partially -sheltered patio offers a transition area from indoors to outdoors. Further away, toward the rear of the yard, is a swimming pool. Along the left (west) side of the house is a long stretch of brick pavers similar to those in front. Many of these landscape features are shown in a plan by landscape architect Geraldine Knight Scott. They include: * the paved driveway and parking area in the approach to the house * the brick (or cast stone) pavers directly in front of the house * two wooden fences, one beginning at the front right corner of the house that encloses the east yard, and the other at the right side of the house, enclosing a deck * the open space on the right side of the house, to the right of the fence, called the "lawn" in the landscape plan * the patio immediately back of the house, called the "terrace" in the landscape plan, paved with squares of aggregate bounded by wooden spacers, and * the swimming pool in the back yard. While Scott must have installed some or most of these features, it remains unclear which ones she installed and which ones already existed when she drew the plans.
