8.B. - Page 29 of 66
William Kostura, Historic Resource Evaluation for 970 Edgewood Road
The carport and garage
Set in the center of the lot is the house with an attached carport and garage. The carport
and garage form a wing that projects forward from the southwest corner of the house.
Combined, the carport and garage measure about fifty feet in length by twenty feet in
depth. The carport was built first, at the same time as the house, with a flat roof and an
open vehicle entrance. The garage was added in 1966, to a design by Edwin Wadsworth,
who was also the architect of the house. It shares a flat roof with the carport and has a
tilt -up wooden door that is almost as wide as the structure itself. The door and the narrow
wall areas surrounding it are covered with vertical redwood siding, the same as is found
on the house.
The house
The house is one story in height, is wood -framed in construction, and is clad in painted v -
groove redwood siding laid vertically. This siding is the same as that used in the garage
and fence. The front of the house is dominated by a very wide, low-pitched gabled roof.
This roof has broad eaves on all sides, with a wooden soffit and plain vergeboard. On the
east and west sides of the house, the long rafters are exposed.
In its plan the house is an irregular collection of rectangular massings. From the main
body of the house, a forward projection at left contains a bedroom, and projecting
forward from it is a smaller storage room. (This storage room shares a wall with the
carport.) To the right of the bedroom is a recessed entrance. In the rear (north) wall is a
centrally-placed projection that opens onto the back terrace. This projection measures six
feet in depth by twenty feet in width.
The house is approached via a flat -roofed shelter that is attached to the bedroom wall (at
left) and to the front wall of the main body of the house. The roof of this shelter is
supported by posts and by beams that extend from the bedroom. This roof covers only
the area directly in front of the front door; the paving to the left is not sheltered.
The recessed entrance features a solid wooden door, 3'-3" wide, with an adjacent four -
foot -wide sidelight of translucent glass. A short band of siding stretches over the door
and sidelight. Above this, in the triangular space within the peak of the roof, is a very
broad window that might be considered a fixed transom. This window spans the entrance
area and the bedroom wing at left. To the left, in the east wall of the bedroom, and above
eye level, is a band of four fixed windows divided by mullions.
On the right (east) side of the house, the eaves of the roof extend several feet beyond the
wall plane. As mentioned above, the rafters here are exposed. The roof aside, the major
feature on this side are sliding doors of glass in aluminum frames. These doors are
original.
El
2;
