The closest California got so far are 'Slow Streets', which have similar requirements, but are only <br />temporary: Nacto is also saying 5-10 mph. <br />The setup for a streetscape like this is complex and quite expensive. And Jessica Manzi already <br />confirmed, the average speed on Lathrop St. and Beech St. will be 25mph and higher. And there will be <br />>100 parking spots. And there will be garage entrances. And there will be drop-off zones. And, and, and <br />... so basically this is not a "Bicycle Boulevard" in the spirit of a 'Shared Space', this is a San Mateo <br />"Bicycle Boulevard" in the spirit of Alameda de Las Pulgas North of Jefferson or Whipple Ave. <br />Don't believe me? Just look at the County's Active Transportation Plan: <br />Class III Bicycle Route <br />v <br />zs <br />A Class 3 facility is a regular street with a sign and an average speed >25mph. Without sharrows it's <br />called a Bike Route and with sharrows it becomes a "Bicycle Boulevard". <br />Or in short, if you wouldn't let your 8 year old child or your 80 year old grandma ride their bike, scooter, <br />wheelchair in the middle of Alameda De Las Pulgas, Jefferson Ave, Roosevelt Ave, Redwood Ave and <br />other Redwood City'sharrowed streets' — don't call it a "Bike Boulevard" <br />And if Stevenson Diaz, Muenzer or Manzi would ever let their 8 year old child or 80 year old grandma <br />ride their bike, scooter, wheelchair in the middle of Alameda De Las Pulgas, Jefferson Ave, Roosevelt <br />Ave, Redwood Ave and any other Redwood City'sharrowed streets' —they would probably be charged <br />for child and/or elderly abuse. <br />If you want to follow the law and executive orders of Gov. Schwarzenegger and Newsom, you send this <br />project back to the drawing board and make sure the Developer and City Staff come back with a concept <br />to make Lathrop and Beech Street a real 'Shared Space' that promotes Active Transportation, Vision <br />Zero, Safe -Routes, Complete Streets and therefore reduces Vehicle Trips, Vehicle Miles and GHG <br />emissions. You should also instruct Mark Muenzer to finally call Toks Omishakin and Tony Tavares to <br />create the Grand Boulevard, Mayor Howard is promising for over 20 years now. And he should also <br />'vigorously' pursue SFPUC in regards Hetch Hetchy, just as decided in the 2010 General Plan. <br />Anyways the current concept will not do any of those things — it's still creating incomplete and therefore <br />inequitable streets —therefore violating multiple laws — at least the spirit of those laws. <br />Your Staff is currently only 20 years behind modern American concepts.
