From: Lisa Vance Voorde <br />To: GRP -City Council <br />Subject: PUBLIC COMMENT SUBMISSION FOR ITEM #8A -- 11/9/20 MEETING <br />Date: Monday, November 9, 2020 11:59:42 AM <br />Attachments: 2020 -11 -08 -20 -25 -01 -save -redwood -roller -rink. odf <br />RE: South Main Mixed -Use Project Approval <br />Dear City Council Members, <br />I represent Save Redwood Roller Rink, a group established on July 6, 2020 <br />as a way to organize and encourage Redwood City to either retain the roller <br />skating rink where it has been for 64 years at 1303 Main St., or to build a <br />new one at the South Main Mixed -Use Project in the 19,000 square foot <br />parcel designated by Greystar Development as "family -friendly <br />entertainment". <br />One of my first tasks as leader of this group was to form a petition to rally <br />support. Unbelievably, we exceeded our goal of 1,000 signatures in only <br />four days, and now have a total of 1,217 signatures and 416 comments. I <br />hereby submit this petition as part of the public record, and you will find the <br />PDF with all public comments attached. I urge you to take a look at the <br />comments and see what the community has to say about roller skating and <br />Redwood Roller Rink, a recreational institution that for generations has <br />served kids and families, amateur and competitive skaters, individuals with <br />special needs, roller sports teams, and people of all ages, races, and social - <br />economic backgrounds. You can also view the original petition by clicking <br />HERE. <br />In my work since July, I have met several roadblocks. However, two things <br />that have remained constant: (1) The overwhelming support from the <br />community for a roller skating rink in Redwood City, and (2) Greystar <br />Development's commitment to including just this kind of recreational <br />amenity and community benefit in the South Main Mixed -Use Project, <br />assuming an operator could be found. I'm pleased to say that now we do <br />have a roller skating operator (JANDD Enterprises) on board, and Greystar <br />has been a willing negotiating partner to ensure this kind of business will be <br />viable in these uncertain economic times. <br />With that said, I ask the City to also support the inclusion of a roller skating <br />rink in the South Main Mixed -Use Project by encouraging Greystar to <br />
