Norcal Crew comments re: Redwood City/County of San <br />Mateo land swap <br />November 9, 2020 Meeting Agenda item 7A - Study Session on Potential <br />Bayfront Park and Navigation Center <br />Diane Howard, Mayor <br />Shelly Masur, Vice Mayor, Councilmembers Alicia Aguirre, Ian Bain, Janet <br />Borgens, Giselle Hale, Diana Reddy <br />Dear Councilmembers, <br />My name is Michael Strambi and I am a Board Director of Norcal Crew <br />based out of Redwood City. Norcal Crew is a 501(c)3 nonprofit <br />organization dedicated to the development of youth through the sport of <br />rowing. The organization is overseen by a board of directors, managed by <br />an executive director and coaching staff, and supported by its membership <br />and the surrounding community. <br />We have reviewed the Staff Report associated with this agenda item, and <br />believe the "Option 2" configuration identified in the staff report on p. 5 <br />provides the greatest opportunity for the community to construct an aquatic <br />community center facility as well as maximize general public access to the <br />waterfront area. <br />In evaluating the any option for our community, land capacity is a critical <br />factor in addition to immediate water access. For a rowing community, a <br />recreational environment that is ideal to promote water sport activities <br />would include a functional aquatics center that would have: <br />-capacity to store boats indoors to prevent damage from the sun and <br />related elements (today boats are stored outdoors and experience <br />significant weathering damage as a result); <br />-adequate building egress distances that allow for efficient entrance <br />and safe exiting of boats from the building into the water; <br />-sufficient building length to store the extended length of our boats; <br />-appropriate indoors training space for exercise; <br />-adequate community space for meeting rooms. <br />
