We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to provide further insights on
these guiding requirements of a well performing aquatics center.
As further background on our club which has operated out of the BIAC
center for over ten years, Norcal's mission is to provide opportunities for
instruction, training, and competition in the sport of rowing to middle and
high school students across the San Francisco Peninsula. Norcal strives to
provide a comprehensive training program in order to strengthen its
student -athletes' personal development and enhance readiness for
matriculation through college.
Norcal Crew has been fortunate to have partnered with the Bair Island
Aquatic Center (BIAC) since 2004. As a youth -based recreational
organization, we are greatly appreciative of the tremendous support that
the City of Redwood City has provided to our organization over the years.
We offer recreational and club rowing programs throughout the year for
over 300 youth participants, including the offering of scholarship programs
to underserved youth, and have partnered closely with the Recreation
department of the City of Redwood City to offer introductory rowing
programs.
We are proud of our heritage in Redwood City and look forward to the
opportunity to further expand our programs as demand clearly has been
exceeding our current capacity. We have seen many more athletes become engaged in the sport
of rowing this summer, many who have suffered severe activity limitations
in other sports. In fact, the traditional rowing on "Eights" has been reduce
to 2 and 4 man boats, therein increasing the traffic and the number of
coaches. Hence, the demand for access and space is heightened more
than ever.
As a long-term partner of BIAC and the City of Redwood City, we are
supportive of the redevelopment activities taking place near our current
operating location along the Redwood Creek. We believe the enhanced
public benefit that is being planned is well suited for this location and look
