The Honorable Mayor Diane Howard/City Council Page 6 August 7, 2020 At a Minimum, Placing a Homeless Shelter Next to Hem Industrial Uses Will Require Careful Planning and Mitigation Measures Finally, if, in compliance with CEQA and the City's General Plan, the City Council decides to approve the Project, and the County proceeds with plans to construct a replacement facility for the Maple Street Shelter at 1402 Maple Street, in the interest of its future residents, design features should be incorporated into the new facility to reduce the impact of locating this facility next to a heavy industrial area. As noted above, a rail spur lies at the boundary of the Graniterock/Redwood City facility and the 1402 Maple Street property, and heavy industrial uses invariably include levels of noise, traffic, lights and odors typically incompatible with residential uses. Appropriate landscaping, sound buffers and other architectural features should be considered by the County in connection with the design and construction of any replacement facility, to reduce these notable impacts. In sum, Graniterock fully supports both the Blomquist Street Extension project, and the mission of the Maple Street Shelter. Our goal is to help ensure that meaningful and thoughtful analysis is conducted before the shelter is relocated adjacent to a heavy industrial area. Thank you for your time and consideration.
