From: Teresa Ortega
To: GRP -City Council
Subject: 8.A. agenda item - public comment
Date: Sunday, November 8, 2020 8:29:56 PM
Dear City Council Members,
We are local educators writing to express our concern about and opposition to the South Main
Mixed -Use Project. This project would make Redwood City's housing crisis worse. Adding
530,000 sq. ft of office space and 28,000 sq. ft. of retail space but only 147 affordable housing
units would do a tremendous disservice to the current residents of Redwood City. Adding 393
un -affordable units would only continue to hurt the market for current residents by driving
rents further upward. We implore you to prioritize existing residents' health and stability over
the profits of big developers. Please stop approving more luxury, un -affordable units. This is a
racial justice issue: Driving up the cost of housing will disproportionately affect marginalized
communities of color. Making one-third of the new units affordable and two-thirds un-
affordable is not progress! It is 1 step forward and 2 steps back.
Again, we ask that you please prioritize the wellbeing of working families over the profits of
property developers. Please vote no.
Thank you,
Teresa Ortega & Leah Thomas
