From:
Steven Ganz
Tw.
GRPG Counal
subjac
Agenda itan #6C
Date
Monday, November 9, 2M ):37:19 PM
I seem to have misunderstood the instructions for speaking at the meeting. I'm still
hoping that I may be able to do that, but in case I am not, I am providing the
comments I was intended to give here.
Hello, I'm Steven Ganz. I'm speaking about item 6C.
First, as somebody who worked in opposition to the Canyon Lane project, I'd like to extend my
sincere thanks and appreciation to Mel and Marguerite Casey for their generosity in resolving the
matter in this way, which will benefit the community and posterity.
But as we join in thanking the Casey s and planning the expansion of Garrett park, I want to also
consider the remainder of the canyon bottom. If this effort that brought so much of the community
together leads to a determination that the canyon bottom not be built on for all the reasons we've
given: the risks both of rapid flooding and of canyon collapse, the difficulty of defending against fire,
and the importance to the area's residents and wildlife, if this effort leads to a determination that
the area remain accessible and not be built on, then that is something we can all be proud of.
But I'm concerned about the decision not to accept the tenth parcel. While it may not be an
appropriate addition on its own to Garrett Park, if the City Council appreciates the importance of
and shares those goals, I can't understand the reluctance to be more active in making sure the tenth
parcel is placed under holding that will ultimately allow it to be joined with others. It is not realistic
to expect that all of these parcels will made available at the same time, and it is odd for the City to
state that it wants to play no role in advance of the remaining parcels being made available as a
contiguous block. I urge the City to accept the loth parcel as well or to work with nonprofit
organizations such as the Peninsula Open Space Trust to ensure that the entire Canyon bottom is
protected from further development and that it remains open to people as well as wildlife.
Steven Ganz
Entrepreneur, Author, Consultant
