8.C. - Page 1 of 9 <br />/<�ik <br />Redwood <br />CitylCallifornia <br />Faunded 1867 <br />A,&/ <br />DATE: January 11, 2021 <br />SUBJECT <br />STAFF REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br />Proposed Arts Commission Work Plan for creation of a racial equity mural <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />By motion, approve the Arts Commission's proposed Work Plan for creation of a racial equity mural. <br />STRATEGIC PLAN GUIDING PRINCIPLE <br />Equity <br />BACKGROUND <br />On August 10, 2020, the City Council adopted a resolution declaring that Black Lives Matter and <br />reaffirming the City of Redwood City's commitment to racial equity. The City Council also directed the <br />Redwood City Arts Commission to formulate a work plan to erect a mural or monument that symbolizes <br />the City's ongoing commitment to racial equity. <br />Through the City Council's discussion, their direction to the Arts Commission included their expectation <br />that the future piece of art be "uplifting, inspiring, thought-provoking, and timeless." Additionally, the <br />work plan and public engagement process is to be "thoughtful, robust, engaging, inclusive, and effective." <br />The Arts Commission is an advisory body to the City Council.
