88
Page 1

July 7, 2008

INFORMATION ONLY

SUBJECT
New General Plan Monthly Status Report

BACKGROUND
The purpose of this report is to provide Council with a brief summary on the progress of the
New General Plan since the last update was provided to you on May 19, 2008.
Throughout June staff and the General Plan consultants have been gathering important
background data, begun to work on technical background reports, worked on a fact sheet
for eventual citywide distribution, and conducted a pedestrian safety audit.

. Background data - Staff continues to gather important traffic, parcel and building
footprint data so as to include in the traffic model. This baseline data is important for
the traffic model so that staff can then project traffic impacts that will result from various
land use scenarios.
. Technical Background Reporls - The General Plan consultant is preparing several
technical reports for staff review. They include the Land Use and Community Design
background report; Economic Conditions background report, and Traffic/Circulation
Background Reports. These reports will provide the basis and discussion for eventual
General Plan policies and implementation measures. Staff is still gathering data for
these reports. One document that will be available in 2 weeks is the Policy workbook.
The workbook will examine all existing General Plan policies and discuss what policies
are still pertinent and which should be eliminated. Staff eventually will forward the
document to the General Plan Committee for its review.
. Fact Sheet - The General Plan consultants have prepared a bi-lingual fact sheet which
provides a basic discussion ofthe General Plan, guiding principles, and schedule. The
General Plan Committee and the Public Information Officer have reviewed the draft
document and have suggested some revisions. The fact sheet will be revised and
ultimately distributed city-wide.
. Pedestrian Safety Audit - On May 30 and May 31, staff and consultants conducted a
pedestrian safety audit. The purpose of the audit was to identify opportunities to
improve pedestrian safety and walkability, and to also showcase Redwood City's
success stories and mistakes. (The audit was financed by a special grant). Three
areas were the focus of the audit: Veterans near Maple (Kaiser Hospital); a school
cluster area consisting of Sequoia High School, Mt. Carmel, McKinley, Redeemer
Lutheran, Northstar); and a representative segment of Woodside Road corridor (near
Kentfield). Approximately 10 individuals participated in the audit representing a diverse
group of pedestrians, Le. seniors, a member of the bicycle pedestrian working
