Martin Partian, President of the Canada College Senate, spoke about the benefits of
this project. Secondly, he said that this is one of the larger employers in the County
and so he is looking for support for the project because of its benefits.
Michael Murphy, County Counsel representing the Community College District, thanked
Redwood City staff for being responsive and thorough. He said that the issue of Lead
Agency is a non-issue, and he provided information on the matter. Regarding the
environmental review he explained that it was designed to cover all approvals and it
was done by a firm that is an expert in the area. He explained that the CEQA (California
Environmental Quality Act) review covers all the impacts of this project. Mr. Murphy
stated he had reviewed the letter presented today and nothing new had been added.
Mark Molton, Board Member of Housing Leadership Council, offered his support to this
project. He believes this is a great opportunity for communities to come together to
make a difference in a college campus. He said this is a way to support our children
and future generations. He was pleased with the multi jurisdictional approach.
Karen Schwarz, elected Trustee for the Community College District, and also serving as
the President of the Housing Corporation for the College of San Mateo Cotlege Vista,
said she supports the project. She provided details on the College Vista program, and
she is pleased with the partnerships and spoke about how the project has improved.
Leonor Cabrera, spoke about how hard it is to cover the costs of rising rents in San
Mateo County. While she works #or the San Mateo Community District she said she
may have to go back to the private sector due to housing costs. She asked Council to
approve this project.
Lennie (Leonor) Roberts, on behalf of the committee for Green Foothills and its Board,
offered support for this project. Ms. Roberts said that usually the committee does not
get involved in particular projects but this one is so important that they decided to take a
stand. She commended the project and asked for Council approval.
Thomas Mohr, with the San Mateo Community College District, said that this is a
unique opportunity and many times when he is interviewing candidates, they will not
take the position because they say they can't afford to live here. He believes the quality
of a college is contingent on the quality of the people who teach there. He thanked the
Council and the staff for the hard work.
Janet Borgens, speaking as a resident (not a Planning Commissioner), offered her
support to this project and spoke about its benefits. Ms. Borgens provided historical
information on Woodhill Estates and how neighbors from Eden Bauer Lane originally
had challenges with it. She believes this is a positive project and in her opinion there is
no substantiated objection to it.
JoAnn Kemist, said she valued the open forum and dialogue that has occurred Mere
and she believes this is an elegant housing project and a win-win situation. She opined
that the problem is that teachers are unable to live in this community.
