B. Redwood City Cross Connection Control Program Ordinance

Recommendation:
Introduce Ordinance Adding Chapter 38, Article VI to the Redwood City Code - the
Cross Connection Control Ordinance. Minute Order 08-089

ORDINANCE ADDING CHAPTER 38, ARTICLE VI TO THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE
CITY OF REDWOOD CITY RELATING TO THE CROSS CONNECTION CONTROL
PROGRAM ORDINANCE (First reading May 12, 2008; publication date May 6, 2008)

Mr. Ezell presented the report, providing background information and highlights of the
ordinance and asked if there were any questions.

Council asked if there are 900 backflows in the city, and how were they placed, whether
new ones would be put in, and if any resident can have them put in. Mr. Ezell stated it was
commercial buildings that have the backflow devices (hospitals, restaurants, etc.) where the
residential water would have to be protected, although a residential home with a fire
sprinkler system in use must have a backflow system since that water can become
stagnant. He stated new ones will be added where necessary, and that there are
requirements for certain home sizes to have fire sprinklers, and in that event they would
also be required to have the backflow system.

Mayor Foust opened the public hearing. There was no public comment.

M/S Ira/Howard to close the public hearing. Motion carries unanimously by voice vote.
M/S by Ira Hartnett to introduce the ordinance.
