Moeller
Redevelopment Manager
City of Redwood City
1017 Middlefield Road
Redwood City, CA 94063

Dear Susan:

Thank you for speaking to me on Thursday about the San Mateo County
History Museum. We propose that the Redwood City Redevelopment
Agency again consider granting $7,500 to help us with the organization of
our "Celebration of the Peninsula's Diversity: Immigrants Day Festival".
The cost of the day is $29,500 (see enclosed budget). We will again ask
corporations to co-sponsor the event. Smaller donations from local
businesses will also be solicited to underwrite some of the museum's staff
time committed to the program. As always, the Agency will be credited in
our promotional materials ~

As you know, among our recent improvements at the History Museum is
the installation of a permanent exhibit gallery dedicated to the immigrant
experience on the Peninsula. This $1 million portion of the museum is
engaging, educational, and highly interactive. The subject is of great
interest to the people of San Mateo County and their visitors. Most people
realize that something like 300/0 of the people of the County have b~en
born in another country. Far fewer realize that back in 1880,30% of the
people of the County were born in another country. Thus the immigrant
experience is both topical and historical.

To complement the display, three years ago the Museum organized an
"Immigrants Day". The committees from the various ethnic communities
that helped us create the gallery assigned representatives to help us.

Last year, seven countries were represented - Ireland, China, Portugal,
Italy, Japan, Mexico, and the Philippines. We scheduled music and folk
dancing on Courthouse Square, featuring performances of all seven
countries. In the rotunda we offered craft activities for children
reminiscent of the ethnic groups. Upstairs we had a "taste of the seven"
with representative foods. All together about 1,000 people attended.

\ft,

Board of Directors

Karen S, McCown
Chairman

Umang Gupta
Immediate Past Chairman

Herm Christensen
Vice Chairman

Phill Raiser
Secretary

Brian Sullivan
Treasurer

AI Acena, Ph,D,

John Adams

Paul Barulich

Keith Bautista

Arthur H, Bredenbeck

Roberta Carcione

John Clinton

Shawn Deluna

Robert Desky

Celeste Giannini

John Inglis
Peggy Bort Jones

Douglas Keyston

Sue Lempert

Joan Levy

Anne Peter

Barbara Rucker

Patrick Ryan
Marcy Saunders

Cynthia l, Schreurs

Paul Shepherd

Mitch Postel
President

President's
Advisory Board

Frank Baldanzi

1 Jack Foster, Jr.

Georgi LaBerge
Greg Munks
John Schrup

Tom Siebel
