Based on our understanding, the 8-inch diameter
pipeline cansists of aproximately 9,000 feet of dipped s#eel pipe installed in 1937 and the 1fi-inch
pipeline consists of approximatefy 9,04Q feet of sieel pipe installed in '978. The pipelines extend
between the Bayshore Freeway and the Seaport Center and are adjacent to the sait evaporatian
ponds on the east side of Seaport Boulevard.
The record drawirtgs forthe 16-inch pipeline indicate that an impressed current cathodic protection
system with iwo rectifiers was installed with the pipeiine. ne of the recters, loca#ed at the pump
statbn on Seaport Court, was recently identifted. The recter is on and is discharging current but the
e#fectiveness of the recter has not yet been determined.
The project scope o#work below is based on designing and installing repfacement cathodic protection
systems on the 8-inch and 16-inch meta(lic pipelines. Cathodic protection is recommended for tFe
pipelines due to the proximity of the salt evaporation ponds and the prior use of the proper#y along the
pipeline alignmen#.
The scope of work is divided into two phases in order to accomplish t►e goal of installing cathodic
protection on the pipelines. Phase I will evaluate the existing condtion o##he cathodic protection and
corrosion rnanitorng systems for the pipelines, locate existing test stations, perform initiatests for
electrical continuity and electrical isolation and provide locations for excavation and installation of test
stations on the pipe[ines.
As discussed,V&A will retain the services of an underground contractor to expose the pipeline at 1 Q
locations. Based on recent praject experience, the excavations are estimated at approximately
$8,000 each.
