Exercise caution when opening attachments or
clicking links, especially from unknown senders.
Dear Council Members:
My husband and I have looked into building an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). If we can manage the costs, we
would love to provide a small space for a CHP officer, for example, or nurse or teacher to rent. What a great
opportunity we could help create for someone in need. Thank you for considering ways to make housing more
robust in Redwood City.
Before you decide to loosen building restrictions, however, I ask that you put yourselves in the shoes of the
homeowners because our property is likely the biggest fmancial commitment of our lives. Please don't allow
anything that you would not want to see from your bedroom window, such as looming buildings that block sunlight,
obstruct views, and eliminate privacy. I ask that you consider loosening building codes only for homeowners who
pull construction permits and rent their units to alleviate the housing shortage.
If a homeowner wants to build, for example, a cabana or art studio or gaming parlor in the backyard, great for them.
But please don't loosen codes to allow encroachment in the setbacks and square footage restrictions for those
personal projects that do nothing to help with the housing crunch. The codes are in place for good reason.
Thank you for taking the time to hear the voices of your constituents.
Sincerely,
Karen Gernand
RWC resident since August 1988
Sent from my iPad
