7g)r0damation <br />Condemning Anti Asian Violence and Racism <br />WHEREAS, Asian -Pacific American communities are suffering acts of discrimination, hate crimes, and <br />microaggressions due to fears ofCOVID-19; and <br />WHEREAS, due to the increased occurrence of violence against Asians, the League of California Cities Asian Pacific <br />Islander Caucus has issued a statement denouncing the senseless attacks that occurred in Atlanta, Georgia where at <br />least eightpeople were murdered, six ofwhom were of Asian descent; and <br />WHEREAS, this is an unimaginable tragedy for the victims, their families and the Asian American community; and <br />WHEREAS, we stand in solidarity with all those who have suffered at the hands of senseless violence and call <br />attention to the continued rise in anti -Asian motivated attacks; and <br />WHEREAS, such anti -Asian rhetoric and sentiment is inaccurate and stigmatizing, tends to incite fear and <br />xenophobia, and may put Asian -Pacific Americans at risk of retaliation; and <br />WHEREAS, in Redwood City, 11.5% of the total population is of Asian and Pacific Islander descent; and <br />WHEREAS, more than 2 million Asian American and Pacific Islanders are risking their lives every day, working on <br />the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in health care, law enforcement, first response, transportation, and service <br />industries including grocery stores; and <br />WHEREAS, Asian American businesses have been targeted for vandalism, and Asian and Pacific Islander older <br />adults, in particular those who are recent immigrants with limited English language proficiency, are now facing <br />greater challenges of discrimination due to anti -Asian rhetoric; and <br />WHEREAS, anyone who has either seen or been a victim of these senseless attacks is strongly encouraged to report it <br />to the Stop AAPI Hate Center; and <br />WHEREAS, the COVID-19 disease does not respect borders and is not caused by ethnicity, and the World Health <br />Organization has cautioned against using geographic descriptors because they can fuel ethnic discrimination. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL VED THAT I, DIANE HOWARD, MAYOR OF REDWOOD CITY, <br />on behalf of the City Council and the residents of Redwood City, do hereby condemn all manifestations or expressions <br />of racism, xenophobia, discrimination, anti -Asian sentiment, scapegoating and ethnic or religious intolerance not only <br />in Redwood City but throughout the nation and call upon our community and all public officials to denounce anti - <br />Asian sentiment in any form. <br />Date: March 22, 2021 <br />Lisselte <br />Diene d, thio <br />G e& Hale, Um 1 Payor <br />{lil e. <br />Member <br />DiarmRed Carr if fry Xer <br />Afichael Smith, Council A9enrber <br />
