REV: 06-05-2020 RL
Exhibit A
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION and ACCOUNTABILITY
RCSD operates six full-service community schools, serving over 3,700 pre-K-8 th graders.
The goal of the Community Schools model is to address the barriers to learning by more
efficiently coordinating efforts and resources to bolster students’ learning, strengthen
families, and promote healthy communities. Community Schools directly align with San
Mateo County’s 2025 shared vision around building a healthy, prosperous and collaborative
community.
RCSD’s network of full-service Community Schools provides students and their families with
daily expanded learning opportunities, counseling support, family engagement
opportunities, and a wide range of safety net services – all in a coordinated, leveraged, and
intentional manner.
Our Focus for 2020-2021
1. Building family capacity in school system, family stability, and at home
learning.
We define family engagement as meaningful connections between schools and their
students’ families. According to research, family engagement at school and communication
with school are predictors of student achievement.
RWC2020 and Community Schools have co-designed a new family engagement plan that
aims at turning our Leadership groups into promoters of knowledge (promotoras) and
meaningful capacity building. Our vision: designing monthly modules around 3 main
modules:
Community building/ schoolwide outreach
Educational partners/ At home learning
System navigation/ Community resources
Each module (meeting) will follow same script:
Learning and reflection: working through that module's content and creating
probing questions -> building the participants' capacity. Changing how they view
their role in their family, community, and school.
Action: trying it out ourselves, sharing with others. -> sharing the tools school-wide:
disseminating knowledge promotoras style.
RCSD will start working with all Community Schools in the fall. By partnering with parents in
a deeper capacity, where we support their skill acquisition beyond outreach and onto content
dissemination, RCSD Community Schools will be able to reach more families in more
informal spaces and touchpoints, and overcome the presence-based requirements.
Content created for the family leadership teams will be replicated and shared through
ATTY/AGR.2020.090/Redwood City School District (Page 6 of 8)
