26 <br /> <br />3. Ensure that Contractor’s veterinary medical staff regularly monitor the status of <br />individual animals and the population as a whole. <br />4. Have and apply written disease prevention and response policies and procedures. <br />Disease response procedures should include measures to minimize transmission to <br />unaffected animals or people and should ensure appropriate care of the affected animals. <br />Procedures should include a treatment plan where decisions are based on a range of <br />appropriate criteria, including the ability to safely and humanely provide relief, duration of <br />treatment, prognosis for recovery, the likelihood of placement after treatment, the number <br />of animals who must be treated and the expense and resources available. <br />5. Ensure that there is preventive health care appropriate for each species and include <br />protocols that strengthen resistance to disease and minimize exposure to pathogens. <br />6. Ensure that medications and treatments are only administered with the advice of a <br />veterinarian or in accordance with written protocols provided by a veterinarian, and all <br />drugs are dispensed in accordance with federal and state regulations. <br />7. Whenever possible, ensure all veterinary care and treatments are recorded in <br />Chameleon (or any successor system). <br />8. Microchip and spay/neuter all animals for adoption prior to pick up by new owner, as <br />required by law, unless a veterinarian determines the procedure is not safe for the <br />animal’s health to performed. <br />9. Have written policies regarding care and treatment of injured and sick animals and that <br />are in alignment with State or local laws and address. <br />B. Veterinarian medical licensing/registration <br />Contractor will: <br />1. Maintain current premise permits and meet all veterinary licensing requirements as <br />specified by the California Veterinary Medical Board and California and federal law. <br />2. Maintain licensure to dispense and supply shelter and field services staff with the <br />controlled substances necessary for performance of field captures and euthanasia, <br />including the monitoring and security of such substances. <br />3. Ensure that veterinary staff meet certification and/or license requirements set forth by <br />the State of California. Staff includes veterinarians, registered veterinary technicians, and <br />other licensed or certified personnel. <br />C. Medical examination, treatment, and medication <br />Contractor will: <br />1. Ensure that the veterinary staff 1) perform a medical examination upon arrival for all <br />sick/injured animals, 2) direct and monitor the care of injured and/or sick animals, 3) <br />adheres to and directs procedures to reduce or respond to the outbreak of infectious <br />diseases, and 4) provide a medical exam for all animals (except those needing <br />emergency care) within 24 hours of arriving at the shelter. <br />2.
