Boulevard as a City gateway, with visitors to Redwood City forming their first impression of the community
as they exit U.S. 101 at Whipple Avenue and drive down Veterans Boulevard toward the Downtown core.
Redwood City has initiated a bold and promising program of Downtown renaissance. As the City continues
to implement that program, we will create inviting and attractive paths of travel into Downtown.

Consistent with the Built Environment Element, the City encourages residential uses in mixed use areas to
create a lively pedestrian experience along the corridors. The Dodge Site is designated as Mixed Use-
Corridor, which allows up to 60 units per acre, with a maximum height of six stories. This designation
provides for the reinvention of key corridors to support major transit and complementary commercial and
residential uses. Development approaches allow for both horizontal and vertical mixed use, with ground-
floor commercial uses required at designated nodes. The following summarizes the long-term vision and
policy for Corridors such as portions of Veterans Boulevard.

Corridors General Plan Goals and Policies:

GOAL BE-11:

Policy BE-11.1:

Policy BE-11.2:

Policy BE-11.3:

Policy BE-11.4:

Policy BE-11.5:

Policy BE-11.6:

32

Corridors. Combine residential and office uses with commercial
development to reduce automobile trips and encourage walking,
and facilitate compact, sustainable development.

Promote mixed-use developments that include higher-density
residential units that transition sensitively with adjacent
lower-density residential uses.

Improve public streetscapes along the Corridors, including
widened sidewalks and crosswalks, protected crosswalks,
regular street tree planting, bus shelters and street furniture,
and pedestrian-oriented street lighting.

Provide that buildings located along Corridors be designed to
define the public realm, activate sidewalks and pedestrian
paths, and provide "eyes on the street" in accordance with the
following principles:

Site I nformation for Alternative Locations for the Proposed Replacement Jail
September 2, 2009
