2021 Multijurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan Definitions/Acronyms <br />xvii <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />terrorism—The unlawful use or threatened use of force or <br />violence against people or property with the intention of <br />intimidating or coercing societies or governments. <br />Terrorism is either foreign or domestic, depending on the <br />origin, base, and objectives of the terrorist or organization. <br />thunderstorm—A storm with lightning and thunder <br />produced by cumulonimbus clouds. Thunderstorms <br />usually produce gusty winds, heavy rains, and sometimes <br />hail. Thunderstorms are usually short in duration (seldom <br />more than 2 hours). <br />TOD—Transit-Oriented Development <br />tornado—A violently rotating column of air extending <br />between and in contact with a cloud and the surface of the <br />earth. Tornadoes are often (but not always) visible as <br />funnel clouds. <br />transportation incident—A major incident related to a <br />means of transportation such air, rail or highway travel <br />resulting in death, serious injury, or extensive property <br />loss or damage. <br />UN—United Nations <br />USDA—U.S. Department of Agriculture <br />USDM—U.S. Drought Monitor USGS— <br />U.S. Geological Survey <br />vulnerability—Assessment of how exposed or <br />susceptible an asset is to damage. Vulnerability depends <br />on an asset’s construction, contents, and the economic <br />value of its functions. <br />watershed—An area that drains downgradient from areas <br />of higher land to areas of lower land to the lowest point. <br />windstorm—Generally short-duration events involving <br />straight-line winds or gusts exceeding 50 mph. These <br />gusts can produce winds of sufficient strength to cause <br />property damage. <br />WUI—Wildland Urban Interface <br />Zone C, Zone X—Areas determined to be outside the 1 <br />percent and 0.2 percent annual chance floodplains. <br />zoning ordinance—Ordinance that designates allowable <br />land use and intensities for a local jurisdiction.
