Learn why this is important
Dear Mayor Gee and City Council Members,
We are writing in support of Mrs. Lourdes Romero and Mr. Alberto Cortes, who live at 129
Madison Street, Redwood City. We want to highlight the devastating impact the proposed
development at 112 Vera will have on them and others in that R-4 Zoned community and urge
you to reject the construction.
129 Madison Street is their family home of 26 years and is at great risk due to the High-
Density housing project at 112 Vera Street, directly behind and adjacent to their property. The
property at 112 Vera has been a public nuisance for some time and has been vacant since
1992. Recently, vagrancy and crime have increased and directly impacted their family with
frequent trespassing on their property. The owner has never completed any development
efforts in all of these years and now a Southern California developer is "in-contract" to
purchase this lot for $6 million and is proposing this 8 story, 178 unit building on .6 of an acre
in a lovely residential neighborhood. Attached is a detailed description of the 112 Vera
Project. There is no way of knowing how much crime and vagrancy will decrease, not to
mention the impact of the construction on their home and safety and on other neighbors in the
years it will take to build the project.
Mrs. Romero immigrated here 37 years ago. She has worked for us for over 15 years, helping
us maintain our three different residences. Mrs. Romero is incredibly hard working and
trusted but more importantly, she is a close member of our family. Her advice and care are
invaluable to us. Many friends who have employed her over the years share our high regard
for her and her family.
Mr. Alberto Cortes was a mechanical engineer in Mexico and immigrated to the United States
in 1989. They met and married here and have built a beautiful life. Mr. Cortes first built a
successful towing company and now works at Pivotal. He is also a kind, honest, hardworking
man and has helped us over the years with many projects.
In addition to the positive impact of their lives on the community, they have raised four
children who have all graduated from college and have successful careers. They are strong
members of their church and have devoted their lives to helping so many others. They bought
their house 26 years ago and have carefully expanded it all within code. Their home is
extremely important to them and to their children. They have been good neighbors, are tax
paying, responsible citizens and the best story of the United States immigrant experience.
We have attached more information on this project. We hope the City Council can find a way
to support this family and others who live in Zone R-4 in Redwood City in ways that do not
destroy the hard work and dreams of people like Mrs. Romero and Mr. Cortes. We strongly
urge you to veto the project at 112 Vera.
Sincerely,
Nancy and Larry Mohr
