Learn why this is important
Dear Mayor Gee, Vice Mayor Espinoza-Garnica and City Council Members,
I write in support of the City Council's Business License Tax Ad Hoc Committee's
recommendation, as set forth in item 7.A and the supporting documents on the agenda
for the City Council meeting this evening, July 22, 2024. The proposed measure to
modernize Redwood City's Business License Tax (BLT) should be placed on the ballot
for voter approval in the November 5 general election.
I support the measure for the many reasons set forth in the Staff Report. Redwood
City must adopt reasonable measures to address the anticipated budget shortfall. The
current outdated BLT procedures fail to generate sufficient revenues to provide
services that are essential not only to the city's residents, but also to those engaged in
business here.
It is commendable that the proposal aims to support smaller businesses, mitigate the
regressive nature of the current BLT structure, and provide predictability and certainty
through the imposition of a cap. The concerns of the business community have been
acknowledged and addressed by the proposal. This is an important issue that should
be presented to the voters at the earliest opportunity.
Many thanks to the staff for their work on the report. And thank you for the
opportunity to express my support of this effort.
Sincerely,
Ruth L.
