1

84/101 Communicaon Plan
December 2023
1. Project Execuve Summary
The California Department of Transportaon (Caltrans) and the City of Redwood City (City), in
cooperaon with the San Mateo County Transportaon Authority (SMCTA), are leading the
effort to reconstruct the U.S. Highway (US) 101 and State Route 84 (SR 84)/Woodside Road
Interchange and Port Access Project (Project).

Constructed in 1959, the project area has been recognized as a significant regional and state
problem for decades; since 1988, Caltrans has listed it as a priority and SMCTA has designated
it as a Key Congested Area.
The Project will resolve mulple issues related to safety and equitable access (delineated
below) with many benefits. The Project will reconstruct SR 84 (Woodside Road) and the CA-
101 interchange to replace all ramps, widen Woodside Road to improve traffic flow, lower
Woodside Road to increase the vercal clearance for improved freight safety, and eliminate the
5-leg intersecon at Broadway/Woodside Road to reduce delay and improve operaons. In
addion, the project will signalize ramp intersecons, add turn lanes with longer pocket
Figure 1: Project Design Exhibit with Mobility Directions
