2

lengths, construct direct-connect flyover ramps between Veterans Boulevard and US 101, add
new sidewalks, and add Class I, II, IV bikeways. The project will embrace the Complete Streets
and Safe Systems approach to enhance non-vehicular mobility and safety, while incorporang
efficient and effecve funconal design to improve passenger vehicle and truck traffic
operaons necessary to reduce congeson.

1.1. Rebranding of Project: 84/101 Interchange Reimagined
In fall 2023, the Project was rebranded to provide an updated message that highlights
alignment with regional priories for stakeholders and focused messaging for external
communicaons. Slide decks containing detailed stakeholder engagement informaon can be
found on SharePoint: Documents/09 Public Outreach/09.03 Presentaons/PowerPoint
Templates.
The 84/101 Interchange Reimagined creates soluons for current problems and reimagines the
interchange to meet the needs of all users.
Problem Soluon
Highway safety and traffic
congeson: between 1/1/2018 to
12/31/2022, there were 195
collisions within the project
footprint: 1 fatal and 7 severe
injury crashes.
Provide operaonal improvements that eliminates
hazardous backup queuing into 101 travel lanes
- by creang the flyover ramps to/from Veterans Blvd.
- by replacing the 5-legged intersecon with a more
efficient ramp configuraon.
- by installing safety countermeasures (traffic signals,
gates at crossings with signs, etc.)
Lack of bicycle and pedestrian
facilies which prevents safe and
equitable access to regional
facilies

- Construct new class I, II, and IV bike/ped facilies
through the interchange.
- Correct two unsafe at-grade railroad crossings.
Congeson-related delays - Improve freight access to and from the Port of
Redwood City.

The following is a link to collision data in the project area (can filter based on bike/ped or
vehicle-related accidents):
htps://experience.arcgis.com/experience/60241dd9e01d481f8311374b7279486f/page/Heat-
Maps/?views=Enjoy-Exploring%2CDUI-Related

1.1.1. Project Benefits: Improved Safety
Improvements will reduce the number of collisions per year by improving traffic flows
and reduc ing delays. Exisng crashes in the Project Area were analyzed using January
1st, 2018 through December 31st, 2022 data from the Transportaon Injury Mapping
