JOHANNA STREET, ARCHITECT Page 8
6. Deteriorated historic features shall be repaired rather than replaced. Where the
severity of deterioration requires replacement of a distinctive feature, the new
feature shall match the old in design, color, texture, and other visual qualities
and, where possible, materials. Replacement of missing features shall be
substantiated by documentary, physical, or pictorial evidence.

As noted in the DPR form the building is in good condition and none of the historic
features appear deteriorated. There does not appear to be in-kind replacement in the scope
of the proposed project, as such it follows Standard 6.

7. Chemical or physical treatments, such as sandblasting, that cause damage to
historic materials shall not be used. The surface cleaning of structures, if
appropriate, shall be undertaken using the gentlest means possible.

The proposed project does not indicate chemical or physical treatments for the existing
building. The only historic material on the building that would be irreparably damaged by
abrasive treatment is the brick veneer. It is assumed that the brick will not be sandblasted
or treated with impermeable coatings. Therefore, the project complies with Standard 7.

8. Significant archeological resources affected by a project shall be protected and
preserved. If such resources must be disturbed, mitigation measures shall be
undertaken.

There are no known archeological resources on the property and there will be minimal
excavation involved in the proposed project. The proposed project complies with
Standard 8.

9. New additions, exterior alterations, or related new construction shall not destroy
historic materials that characterize the property. The new work shall be
differentiated from the old and shall be compatible with the massing, size, scale,
and architectural features to protect the historic integrity of the property and its
environment.

The new work is visually identifiable as new. The rectangular massing on the addition
references the rectangular massing of the existing building. It increases the building
height by one story and does not overwhelm the existing building in size or scale. The
addition is also setback on two sides reducing its impact. The proposed addition is
glazing framed by square stucco panels. The use of stucco is a reference to the existing
building but by dividing it into square panels, the addition reads as new. The design of
the new addition with limited ornamentation does not compete with the existing building
and as such the proposed project meets Standard 9.

10. New additions and adjacent or related new construction shall be undertaken in
such a manner that if removed in the future, the essential form and integrity of the
historic property and its environment would be unimpaired.

ATTY/RESO.0051/HRAC RESO 1100 EL CAMINO REAL - EXHIBIT A
REV: 06-05-023 JB
