City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org
STAFF REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
DATE: September 23, 2024
SUBJECT
Installation of all-way stop signs at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Duane Street
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a resolution authorizing the installation of all-way stop signs at the intersection of Harrison
Avenue and Duane Street.
STRATEGIC PLAN GUIDING PRINCIPLE
Transportation
BACKGROUND
Periodically, the City receives requests for stop sign installation or other measures to improve safety.
These requests are considered in the context of the City’s adopted policies and goals including the City’s
traffic calming policy and Vision Zero goal, which seeks to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries
while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all. Recently, the City received a request to
evaluate the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Duane Street. This intersection is currently a one-way
stop-controlled intersection with a stop sign on Duane Street. It is in close proximity of two schools, North
Star Academy and McKinley Institute of Technology, with a high volume of pedestrian activities to and
from the schools.
In August 2024, Police Department and Engineering and Transportation Department staff conducted a
field review and evaluated the intersection for an all-way stop sign according to local and state standards.
Under City Policy, any new stop sign, removal of a stop sign, or modification to a stop sign requires a City
Council resolution.
6.C. - Page 1 of 4
113
