City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org
Map 3 – Parcel Zoning and Ownership Adjacent to U.S. Route 101
On this map, red indicates that the parcel is zoned Commercial or Industrial, orange is Mixed-Use Corridor,
yellow is Residential and blue is Tidal Plain. The purpose of the Mixed-Use Corridor zoning sub-districts is
to provide areas for a variety of activities, including commercial, office, and high-density residential uses,
or a mixture thereof. Many factors affect whether Caltrans would allow for billboards in certain locations,
even if they are currently used for commercial or industrial purposes. Staff will review these regulations
and consult with Caltrans in the evaluation process of potential billboard locations.
City-owned parcels are indicated with stars on the map above. These sites may not qualify to allow for
billboards under the Caltrans regulations and/or because of existing underground utilities on the site.
Key Takeaways Regarding the Potential Locations for Digital Billboards in Redwood City
Redwood City’s geography, together with the Caltrans regulations that govern billboards, limits the
current number of possible areas where the City may allow for billboards. The main reason for this is
because of the amount of area currently designated as “landscaped freeway.” However, as noted
previously, “landscaped freeway” designations can be adjusted by Caltrans, which would increase the
number of eligible properties that could have a digital billboard.
8.A. - Page 7 of 12
189
