ATTY/RESO.0023/ PC RESO APPROVING AP2022-081
REV: 03-30-2023 JB
The historic report attached to the Staff Report as Attachment 4 analyzes the
proposed project with the Secretary of Interior Standards as well as Redwood
City’s Historic Preservation Ordinance Permit approval criteria and concludes
that the proposed project does not adversely affect the character of the
district and conforms to the prescriptive standards of the Stambaugh Heller
Historic District. The HRAC concurred with this assessment of the criterion
and the Planning Commission agrees.

The Project meets this criterion in that the proposed structure involves the
construction of the proposed duplex adjacent to the historic structure at 1417
Middlefield which would be consistent with the small-scale single and
multifamily character of the vicinity. The new building would be compatible in
building footprint, height, and massing with 1417 Middlefield and the district.
The proposal is compatible by using wood-frame buildings with neutral-toned
siding, simple shingle roof, and emphasizes the home and its front porch as
the most prominent feature as viewed from the street. The proposed duplex
would not be considered a contributing structure to the historic district.

C. In the case of construction of a new improvement, building, or structure
upon a historic site, the exterior of such improvements will not
adversely affect and will be compatible with the external appearance of
existing designated improvements, buildings, and structures on said
site.

The Property is not a historic site, and this criteria is not applicable.

Section 5. This Resolution is effective upon its adoption.

* * *
