ATTY/RESO.0077/CC RESO 1337 HOPKINS AUTHORIZING TO EXECUTE HISTORIC PRESERVATION AGREEMENT (MILLS ACT CONTRACT)
REV: 10-24-24 JB
This Property is one of the older structures in Redwood City and is associated with
the 1920s residential boom in Redwood City in general, and “Dingee Park” in
particular.

b. Criterion B: It is identified with persons or events significant in local, state,
or national history.

The house is associated with Dr. Shiels who owned the house from 1925 to 1943.
Dr. Shiels was a prominent surgeon, physician and medical expert witness in the
Bay Area and New York. He is also earned a medal of honor as a veteran of both
the Spanish American War and World War I. The house is also associated with
Charles Miller, a local contractor, who was active in the early twentieth century and
was noteworthy for the 1911 clubhouse for the Redwood City Woman’s Club.

c. Criterion C: It embodies distinctive characteristics of a style, type, period,
or method of construction, or is a valuable example of the use of indigenous
materials or craftsmanship.

The house is an excellent example of a 1920’s Spanish Revival residence with its
arched porch, low pitched tile roof, stucco surfaces, tile attic vents and expanses
of wall. It retains a high degree of integrity and clearly conveys its 1920s origins.

Section 4. The City Council hereby approves the Mills Act Contract for the
Property and authorizes the City Manager or designee to execute the agreement.

Section 5. The City Council directs staff to file all property documents for
recordation with the San Mateo County Clerk’s office.

Section 6. This resolution shall be effective upon its adoption.

* * *
