City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org
On October 20, 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $105 million to the project
through the Infrastructure for Building America (INFRA) program.
Redwood City has worked closely with SMCTA to program $166 million in local sales tax revenue
(Measures A and W), with the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County (C/CAG) to
provide $8M in State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) funds to the project, and with Caltrans
to solicit funds from federal, state, and regional sources. The City has also required transportation impact
fees and other development-related payments from area developments.
Altogether, the Project has now secured $369.8M of the $384 million project cost. This reduces the $186
million funding gap from one year ago to just $14.2 million today. In November 2024, Redwood City and
Caltrans applied jointly for state funding for this remaining $14.2 million to fully fund the project. The
grant award decision is expected to be made public at the June 26-27, 2025, California Transportation
Commission meeting.
If full funding is secured by mid-2025, as expected, construction could begin in late 2026 or 2027 and be
completed in 2030.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
During the environmental review phase, the Project team held an environmental scoping meeting
(February 2014), two community meetings (March and July 2014), 20 stakeholder meetings, three City
Council study sessions, three meetings with the City Council’s 84/101 Project Ad Hoc City Council
Subcommittee, and a public hearing on the draft environmental document. The environmental phase was
completed in December 2016 with Caltrans’ certification of the Project’s Initial Study/Mitigated Negative
Declaration as fully meeting federal (NEPA) and state (CEQA) requirements.
PUBLIC NOTICE
Public notification was achieved by posting the agenda, with the agenda items being listed, at least 72
hours prior to the meeting.
ALTERNATIVES
The City Council may provide feedback to staff during this study session regarding the SR84/U.S. 101
Interchange Reimagined Project.
ATTACHMENTS
None.
9.A. - Page 5 of 6
85
