I have seen many collisions, near misses, and daily, hear the sounds of screeching
brakes and honking horns. I have almost been hit three times by inattentive drivers
turning at Upton and I pity the school crossing guard who has to deal with drivers
who ignore her stop sign. Recently, in front of my house, a hit and run driver killed
a puppy who had escaped from his new home and was running from the owner.
Other than the weekday traffic jams, I have not witnessed much of anything the
traffic calming project did for the section between Upton and Valota.
What appears to be temporary hard rubber traffic bumps placed on the Roosevelt
roadway east of Valota must have certainly calmed traffic in that area. I now
choose to go a bit out of my way to travel on Oak or Redwood where the bumps are
cement and are curved so that it still requires me to to slow but does not cause
jarring to the occupants or suspension. I hope future steps include replacing the
bumpers with humps similar to those on neighboring streets.
I understand and appreciate the public outreach, engineering and construction work
involved in a project such as this and applaud efforts to make driving, bicycling and
walking safe in our neighborhoods.
Sincerely,
Jim Coffman
1109 Virginia Avenue
