Learn why this is important
Good evening City Council members,
My comment today is in relation to the placement of wireless facilities in Redwood City's residential
neighborhoods by the developer Crown Castle, on behalf of Verizon.
Within less than a year (from Sept 2023 to Aug 2024), Verizon and Crown Castle submitted no less than
72 permit applications to install wireless facilities, and some of those have already been approved by the
City while others are still under review.
These wireless towers present multiple hazards with NO added benefit to residents. The purpose of these
new wireless towers is not to boost CELL service in our area, but to provide wireless broadband
INTERNET, a service that Verizon hopes will give them an edge over their competition.
While I'm generally in favor of more competition, most residents in our neighborhoods already have
broadband internet. Therefore, this latest move by Verizon to place wireless transmitters in residential
neighborhoods seems to only benefit their corporate bottom line rather than us residents or the City. We
are worried about the adverse health impact of the increase in radio-frequency radiation from these
towers, the fire hazard they are representing, and the negative impact on property values for our homes
that are near or right next to those towers.
There has been a complete lack of keeping residents informed of this project, and we feel
completely blind-sided by the City. We urge the City Council to review this project, reject any
further permit applications for these towers, and most importantly update the City's wireless ordinance to
restrict the seemingly random placements of wireless facilities in our residential neighborhoods close to
homes, parks and school sites.
Thank you for your consideration,
Jana Jacobs
