From:Stephanie Katz
To:publiccomment
Subject:Redwood Life project: citizen concerns and objections for April 14 meeting
Date:Friday, April 4, 2025 6:41:16 AM
You don't often get email from stk4@lehigh.edu. Learn why this is important
I agree with the following concerns about the Redwood Life project. These are issues
worrying Redwood Shores residents and the San Mateo County Bird Alliance (SMCBA)
· Increased light pollution over the slough at night from 24/7 traffic, lighted
buildings including a hotel overlooking the slough. This will significantly disrupt the
ability of nocturnal birds to hunt, and of diurnal birds to find nesting or roosting places
where they will not be seen.
· Biotech buildings operate more equipment 24/7 and emit more noise. Traffic will
occur all day and night. Birds and other wildlife will be constantly under stress, normal
activities will be constantly disrupted, and communication due to the noise level will
be disrupted.
· Increased building heights (up to 100’ from current 53’) will shade the slough,
reducing the daylight available to birds and wildlife, and affecting plant growth.
· Insufficient studies have been done on the safety of the landfill, which was closed
and capped in the early 1970s. How will constructing heavier buildings damage the
landfill and potentially release toxic materials into the adjacent environment? Will the
increased buildings’ weight and potential for groundwater incursion due to sea level
rise allow contaminants to move into waterways? Birds and wildlife in and around the
slough and Bay will be very negatively impacted.
Thank you for your consideration.
Stephanie Katz
