This is a study session and no action is required of the City Council. <br />STRATEGIC PLAN GUIDING PRINCIPLE <br />Excellence in Government Operations <br />BACKGROUND <br />The City of Redwood City’s (City) Engineering and Transportation (E&T) and Public Works Services (PWS) <br />Departments work together to plan, design, improve, operate, and maintain the City’s utility systems. <br />These systems provide potable water for consumption, recycled water for non-drinking uses, sanitary <br />sewer (wastewater) collection, and stormwater management services to the Redwood City community <br />and portions of neighboring jurisdictions, including the County of San Mateo, City of San Carlos, Town of <br />Atherton and Town of Woodside. E&T is responsible for conducting engineering studies, developing and <br />implementing master plans, designing engineering plans, and overseeing the construction of capital <br />improvements that replace, extend, and rehabilitate infrastructure. PWS ensures the routine operation, <br />maintenance, and repair of existing infrastructure. Through close collaboration, both departments ensure <br />regulatory compliance and support public health and safety. Master planning plays a key role in <br />maintaining and rehabilitating the City’s aging infrastructure, ensuring compliance with regional, state <br />and federal regulations related to public health, safety, and environmental quality. <br />In this context, the City Council’s Utilities Sub-Committee provides crucial policy guidance to support the <br />ongoing efforts related to the City’s utility systems.
