Learn why this is important
Mayor and members of City Council,
I ask you to support the proposal for adoption of geographies for nomination as Priority
Conservation Areas (PCAs) to the Association of Bay Area Governments.
The Greater Downtown and Southeast Redwood City needs more public spaces. I believe
there is, or was, a plan to create a pleasant walking and recreation path along Redwood Creek
between Convention Way and Veterans Boulevard. This stretch is indeed remarkable for its
bird life, and could become a beautiful and valuable benefit for people working downtown or
living in nearby apartments. I agree with the staff report that the southeast section needs
more parks, more trees – the “urban greening” element of the PCA.
Bair Island and Westpoint Slough are not only of recreational value to residents but can
perform valuable services as the city addresses sea level rise. It appears that the Cargill Salt
Ponds are included: that is also critically important for climate resilience and would be well-
suited for nature-based solutions.
The Redwood Shores Ecological Preserve is already a valued part of Redwood Shores.
Acknowledging that more of the perimeter of the Shores is also valuable to residents is
deserved. This area could also be adapted for increased protection against sea level rise, for
instance with nature-based solutions such as horizontal levees.
Thank you for considering this and keeping the residents informed.
Chris MacIntosh
chrismac@alumni.upenn.edu
