From:Clara Jaeckel
To:publiccomment; GRP-City Council
Subject:public comment for 6/9/2025 city council meeting, agenda item 8B
Date:Monday, June 9, 2025 8:14:57 AM
I appreciate the transparency in publishing the military equipment use report and proposed
policy. The last few days have showed us with renewed urgency how important it is to have
safeguards in place to prevent such equipment being turned on our own residents and visitors.
It's chilling, for just one example, to see the footage of an ICE agent in Los Angeles shooting a
journalist in the back with a rubber bullet while she was reporting. That makes me worried
about how the munitions that are called "less lethal" will end up being used in Redwood City.
I also remain concerned about the acquisition of a new armored vehicle. The return of the
previous military vehicle was a key point of the city's response to residents on June 22, 2020,
when we raised concerns about the murder of George Floyd and the aggressive repression of
the following protests in many cities. Replacing the returned vehicle with a substantially
similar one erases the benefit of the return. That makes it all the more important for the city
council to make sure the equipment you have authorized is not used against our own
community.
Thank you,
Clara Jaeckel
