TRAFFIC REGULATIONS 01 5500-4 <br />3.01 DIVERTING PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC <br />A. Whenever construction operations obstruct the flow of pedestrian traffic or present <br />a hazard to pedestrians, the Contractor shall take appropriate action to protect and <br />separate pedestrians from the work area and to direct pedestrians to alternate <br />routes. <br />B. Requests to close a sidewalk in the middle of the block are generally not accepted <br />because this results in pedestrians having to walk around the work site, usually out <br />into the street, to continue down the sidewalk. <br />C. Such action may include placement of barricades between pedestrians and work <br />areas, placement of warning signs, and provision of personnel as required to <br />protect pedestrians as conditions warrant. Contractors may also route pedestrians <br />into the parking strip provided that a temporary walkway with adequate protection <br />is set up. <br />3.02 DIVERTING BICYCLE TRAFFIC <br />A. Whenever construction operations obstruct the flow of bicycle traffic or present a <br />hazard to bicyclists, the Contractor shall take appropriate action to protect <br />bicyclists and, if necessary, to direct bicyclists to alternate routes. <br />B. Contractor shall maintain all existing bike paths and bike lanes. <br />1. With the closure of any on off-street bike path, Contractor shall provide an <br />alternate route for bicyclists either by use of an alternate paved path or a <br />temporary bike lane on the street. <br />2. Any bike lane that is effectively narrowed below 5 feet is considered a bike <br />lane closure. Contractor shall provide additional bike signs such as <br />“Bicycles Allowed Use of Full Lane” or “Bicycle Route Detour” signs be <br />posted as part of the conditions of the permit. <br />C. If a designated bicycle route is affected during construction, the Contractor shall <br />post a ““Bicycles Allowed Use of Full Lane” (R4-11) sign at the beginning of the <br />block. <br />3.03 DIVERTING VEHICULAR TRAFFIC <br />A. Whenever construction operations obstruct the flow of vehicular traffic or present <br />a hazard to vehicles operating in the vicinity of construction operations, the <br />Contractor shall take appropriate action to warn, detour and otherwise protect <br />approaching drivers and vehicles. <br />3.04 TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES <br />A. General: <br />1. Provide traffic control devices in sufficient quantities and types as required to <br />provide safe and adequate traffic control.
