City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org
of impaired drivers, particularly during times when DUI offenses are more common (e.g., late nights or
weekends).
The proposal also includes acquiring a new dedicated DUI checkpoint trailer. A checkpoint trailer is a
mobile, self-contained unit that is specifically designed to support DUI checkpoint operations. Our current
DUI checkpoint trailer was purchased in 1995 and is now showing signs of significant wear and age.
To enhance the Department’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to DUI-related incidents, the
proposal includes funding for two dedicated marked DUI enforcement electric patrol vehicles. These
specialized vehicles would be equipped with the necessary technology, tools, and equipment to assist
officers in detecting and apprehending impaired drivers. The decision to request electric vehicles aligns
with our ongoing commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and supporting environmentally
sustainable practices. By incorporating electric vehicles into our fleet, we not only contribute to the
protection of the environment but also reduce long-term operational costs associated with fuel and
vehicle maintenance.

For the proposed project to be successful, adequate staffing funding is essential. The project will require
additional officers and support staff to conduct the DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols, ensuring that
the operations are properly staffed, managed, and executed. The staffing funding will cover overtime for
existing officers and support staff.
ANALYSIS
At the time of application staff were not aware that City Council approval was required to seek a grant of
this size. The Redwood City Police Department was awarded $399,415.72 for Fiscal Year 2025/2026. This
funding will support the expansion of DUI enforcement operations, including staffing for DUI checkpoints
and saturation patrols, acquisition of two electric patrol vehicles, and purchase of a fully outfitted DUI
checkpoint trailer. These resources will strengthen the Department’s ability to detect and deter impaired
driving, ensuring safer roadways for all residents and visitors in Redwood City.
The project performance period is from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.
FISCAL IMPACT
The total grant award is $399,415.72. There is no required local match and future grant funding would be
sought to replace the trailer and electric vehicles. Accordingly, no impact to the General Fund is
anticipated. Staff time to administer the grant is included in the Police Department’s operational budget.
6.D. - Page 2 of 38
34
