PROPOSED AMENDED JOB DESCRIPTION <br />CITY OF REDWOOD CITY <br />PRINCIPAL PLANNER <br />DEFINITION <br />Under general direction of the Planning ManagerAssistant Community Development <br />Director/Engineering & Transportation Director, or designee, plans, directs and <br />supervises professional planning activities of the Planning Division /Transportation <br />Division within the Community Development Department/Engineering & Transportation <br />Department; performs a variety of complex technical planning activities relative to <br />assigned areas of responsibility; and performs related work as assigned. <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED <br />Direction is provided by the Planning ManagerAssistant Community Development <br />Director/ Engineering& Transportation Director or designee. <br />Provides direct supervision to Assistant, Associate, and Senior Planners or Assistant and <br />Associate Transportation Engineers as needed. Assignments may include technical or <br />functional supervision of subordinate other Planning staffprofessional staff planner <br />positions. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS <br />This single-position class is distinguished from other City professional planning classes <br />by the level, complexity and City-wide implications of project assignments. The position <br />of Principal Planner is a supervisory classification and is distinguished from the higher - <br />level classification of Assistant Community Development Director/Engineering& <br />Transportation Director Planning Manager in that the Planning Manager Assistant <br />Community Development Director/ Engineering& Transportation Director is responsible <br />for the overall administration of the Planning/Transportation Division. This classification <br />is further distinguished from the lower-level classification of Senior Planner in that the <br />Principal Planner has full supervisory responsibility over professional staff. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: <br />1.Plans, organizes and coordinates aspects of the City’s planning function, including <br />program planning, budgeting, consultant services, setting priorities, and <br />scheduling projects.
