This message was sent from outside your organization.
You don't often get email from michaelarruza2@gmail.com. Learn why this is important
Hello members of city council, my name is Michael Arruza and I am a redwood city resident.
I am writing in support of the 910 Marshall street senior housing development, as I believe it
would go a long way towards helping meet our current and projected senior housing needs in
the bay area.
The population of people over 80 is expected to rise by over 4 million people, and the average
age of an adult in the bay area is inching upwards over time. We have a density bonus for
senior housing for good reason: it's already in short supply today, and the demand is going to
predictably increase moving forward. 222 units of senior housing near downtown means
hundreds of seniors will be able to have their needs met while still having the opportunity to
live near downtown services. The proximity to public transportation like bus stops and the
caltrain is also a tremendous benefit; a 2002 NIH study found that over 40% of people over
the age of 85 no longer drive a car, and having senior housing minutes from bus stops and the
Caltrain will ensure there are transportation options available for them to get around the
peninsula.
On a more personal note, my grandmother suffered from early onset alzheimers and needed
assisted living and memory care for much of her life. I can remember my parents struggling to
find her the care she needed when they first realized she would need specialized long term
support, as even back then high quality senior housing was difficult to find. I sincerely hope
that we make this kind of badly needed housing easy to build in Redwood City, so that other
families and seniors don't have to struggle to find the supportive housing they need.
Thank you,
Michael
