Downtown Beautification <br />Landscaping and beautification efforts greatly <br />contribute to the appeal of downtown Redwood <br />City. Throughout 2024, the RCIA continued <br />to invest in the beautification of Downtown <br />Redwood City. Their efforts were focused all <br />throughout downtown and aided in the creation <br />of beautiful and welcoming community spaces. <br />The Sounds of Redwood City - <br />Piano Design Project <br />In an effort to bring more foot traffic and <br />community gathering opportunities to Downtown <br />Redwood City, the RCIA launched their experiential <br />and media campaign titled “Sights, Sounds & <br />Tastes of Redwood City”. To play into the ‘Sounds <br />of Redwood City,’ the RCIA chose two artists to <br />complete the full coverage design of two baby <br />grand pianos purchased by the RCIA. Fernando <br />Escartiz and Christine Ong-Djicks were carefully <br />selected based on how well they were able to <br />connect and speak to the community through their <br />design concepts. The RCIA held an unveiling <br />ceremony for the first piano, “El Piano Alebrije” by <br />Fernando Escartiz on September 11, 2024 in Jazz <br />Plaza, located next to City Hall and across from the <br />Downtown Library on Middlefield Road. The piano <br />“Living the Life” designed by local artist Chrisine <br />Ong-Djicks, is set to be unveiled in 2025. <br />2024 ANNUAL REPORT • PAGE 7 <br />Placemaking Space <br />In early 2020, the RCIA identified 10 distinct <br />locations within downtown to highlight as <br />spaces for people to come together and enjoy <br />everything the community has to offer. Known <br />as the “Placemaking Program” the goal was to <br />create public spaces that benefit the community’s <br />happiness and wellbeing. In May 2024, the <br />RCIA invested $30K towards the purchase of <br />new tables (10) and chairs (40), including ADA- <br />compliant tables (2).
