23

Table 5 – Bicycle Locker Performance Criteria
CONVENIENCE • Lockers should be visible from but outside of the pedestrian travel path
ORIENTATION • Lockers can be linear, stacked, or in a circle
SECURITY
• Security of the system depends on the security of the wall panels, door,
frame, and locking mechanism
• Fully encloses bicycle (avoid panel joints)
• Weather protection (avoid using plastic materials)
• Securely anchored to the ground with an attached floor.
• High-quality locker door mechanisms that insert two or more tabs into the
internal frame to protect against prying
USER-
ACCESS/PROTECTION
• Limited access for users only
• The door should open at least 90 degrees to allow easy loading/unloading
• Directions for use and how to sign up for lockers should be posted near
lockers
• Stacked lockers should have a wheel track to assist in lifting the bicycle into
the top locker
• Consider using lockers with semi-transparent panels
• An integral smart locking mechanism is recommended because it uses a
digital smart lock, which enables flexible usage and on-demand reservations
• Allows users to determine locker availability and make reservations
before they begin their trip
• Can be operated with magnetic-stipe cards, proximity cards, fobs, or
smartphone Apps
• Enough clearance around lockers to allow for simultaneous users
• Most lockers will not accommodate extended-framed bicycles like cargo
bicycles.
• Plastic lockers are vulnerable to fire
VISIBILITY
• Clearly labeled as bicycle parking
• Lockers should not obstruct pedestrian traffic flows, but they should be
visible to the public
MANAGEMENT
• A bicycle parking manager or vendor is required to assign, inspect, and clean
lockers.
• A locker management program should include policies that do not allow
inappropriate storage, reserve the staff’s right to inspect contents without
notice and dispose of inappropriate items in a specific manner. Requiring
positive identification, a deposit, or a nominal charge against a credit card
can deter unwanted use.
• Avoid using door panels attached to a single-iron or U-channel frame as they
may result in door sag

7.A. - Page 95 of 121
101
