22

Off-Street Design Recommendations
Bicycle Lockers
Although less space-efficient and more expensive than bicycle racks, bicycle lockers provide
secure enclosed bicycle storage for long-term use. Typically, lockers serve one bicycle and provide
limited access security. Bicycle lockers must fully enclose the bicycle, provide weather protection,
be securely anchored to the ground, and resist vandalism. It is important to consider that lockers
may be used to store objects other than bicycles. A bicycle parking manager is necessary to assign
lockers, inspect lockers, and clean lockers between users. Certain locking mechanisms may limit
the number of users who can access the lockers and should be selected based on the intended
use of the lockers (residential, commute, commercial, etc.). The maintenance requirements will
depend on the bicycle locker type and the use frequency. Ultimately, the security of bicycle
lockers depends on the design, materials, and installation.

Figure 20: Bicycle locker (SFMTA)

Figure 21: Bicycle Locker Dimensions (City of Berkeley)

7.A. - Page 94 of 121
100
