37

06. Bicycle Parking Technology and Innovation

Bicycle Lockers
Cargo Bicycle Lockers
Bicycle lockers can be made to fit extended framed bicycles such as cargo bicycles. The bicycle
locker accommodates two cargo bicycles and can be installed in-street over a traditional vehicle
parking spot (Figure 37: Cargo Bicycle Locker). When installed in-street, a reflective bollard is
installed where the door opens to protect users and ensure there is enough maneuvering space
between the adjacent parked vehicles. Additionally, the lockers have a highly reflective trim, and
its modular design makes repairs easy. The bicycle locker features a fail-secure locking mechanism
which remains locked when there’s a power outage. These facilities can be used to retrofit
locations that need secure long-term bicycle parking but lack adequate sidewalk or interior space
for secure bicycle parking. Such facilities can be installed over surface parking stalls that are near
transit stations, schools, or other high-density commercial areas.

Multi-Bicycle Locker
Multi-bicycle lockers can accommodate six bicycles in one weather-protected locker that takes up
half the space of one parked vehicle. Inside the locker, there are floating bicycle racks that allow
individual users to access and lock up their bicycles separately (Figure 38: Multi-Bicycle Locker).
These lockers come in two sizes to fit either 6 or 4 bicycles. The locker features a fail-secure locking
mechanism, solid side panels, optional digital access with basic reporting on use, and an optional
master key system. These facilities can be installed near commercial areas that lack adequate
sidewalk space for secure bicycle parking. They could also be an option for smaller multi-family
housing sites, as they can be installed over surface parking.

Figure 37: Cargo Bicycle Locker
7.A. - Page 109 of 121
115
