Kostura, 839 Blandford Boulevard evaluation The rest of the building is clad in stucco. Generally speaking, with only a few exceptions, windows have replacement vinyl sash that appear to be set in their original openings with original wooden frames or trim. In the brick veneer portions of the house, each window is topped by a lintel that looks like wood but which is stated in the 1991/1992 evaluation to be of concrete. These windows have brick sills, and nearly all are flanked by wooden shutters of indeterminate date, painted black. In the stucco-clad parts of the house, windows have wooden sills and do not have shutters. Three windows retain their original wooden sash and muntins. The most prominent are two large box or oriel windows flanking the recessed porch in the rear part of the central wing. The one at left has a large central window of wood, with vinyl sidelights; while the one at right has a large central window of wood, with wooden sidelights. One other original wooden window remains. It is a small window in the rear part of the central wing. Doors are of several types. The two in front are paneled and are of indeterminate date. Doors in the rear are variously wooden and vinyl, single and paired. Two garage doors in the north wing — one large and one small — have modern roll-up doors. Much of the landscaping appears to be early or original, and most of these older elements are made of brick. The brick elements include: * a slightly curving pathway leading from the sidewalk to the front entrance * three pathways in the rear * three patios in the rear * two steps leading up to the recessed back porch * a brick wall that shelters one of the patios. The patios have brick laid in a herringbone pattern. The two most important patios are one adjacent to the recessed porch and the one next to the brick wall. The third patio is to the southwest, at far right (as one faces the house), and could almost be said to be in a side yard. It is not connected visually to the main part of the back yard or to other landscaping. Evaluation under California Register Criterion 3 Criterion 3 of the California Register evaluates a property for its architecture or design. Resources that qualify under this criterion embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, region, or method of construction, or represent the work of a master, or possess high artistic values. 839 Blandford Boulevard appears to be eligible for the California Register at the local level as a fine and early example of the Colonial Revival Ranch style house, as defined in Virginia Savage McAlester’s A Field Guide to American Houses (2015).
