Kostura, 839 Blandford Boulevard evaluation <br />features are its broadly horizontal emphasis, with a U-shaped footprint that follows the line of the <br />streets; its brick veneer — found mainly in the front of the central wing — which provides color <br />and texture; its hipped roof; and the brick landscape elements. Other notable features are lintels <br />over the windows in the brick-clad areas of the house, the recessed porch in the rear, and the <br />wooden box (or oriel) windows that flank the porch. The Period of Significance is 1939, the year <br />the house was built. <br />Character-defining features <br />The character-defining features of the property that contribute to its historic character are: <br />* Its broadly horizontal plan, which curves in a U shape to conform to the lines of the streets. <br />* The brick veneer in the front of the central wing. Although this brick has been sandblasted, <br />the sandblasting was very lightly performed, and the brick surface is not pitted. <br />* In the brick veneer area named above, the lintels above the windows and the brick sills at <br />the base of each window. The shutters are of unknown date, but since houses of similar style <br />shown on pages 698-699 of the McAlester book all have shutters, it seems likely that the <br />shutters in this house are original, and if they are, they should be considered to be <br />contributors. <br />* The hipped roof. <br />* The recessed rear porch with its wooden elements, including vertical siding, posts, and <br />roof. <br />* The wooden box (or oriel) windows that flank the above porch. In these windows, the <br />wooden muntins and frames are contributing, but the vinyl parts are not. <br />* The brick veneer at the bases of the two box windows in the rear. <br />* A perforated brick window to the right of the main entrance (not described above; see photo <br />below). <br />* A copper or brass address plate near the main entrance (not described above; see photo <br />below). <br />* The brick landscape features in the front and rear, including the pathways, steps, wall, and <br />two of the three patios.
