12

05. Bicycle Parking Design Typology

Bicycle Parking Facility Types
Bicycle parking facilities can be split into two categories: short-term and long-term, as described
in section 0.3.

SHORT-TERM facilities typically accommodate bicycle storage for under two hours and usually
require a separate lock. They are strategically placed in convenient areas for users such as along
main streets.

LONG-TERM facilities accommodate bicycle storage for longer than two hours and are usually in
an enclosed area. It is recommended that parking facilities be designed to withstand cutting and
prying and are securely anchored to the ground.

Short-Term Bicycle Parking Facilities
Short-term bicycle parking facilities should support the bicycle in two places, allow locking for the
frame and one or both wheels with a U-lock, be securely anchored to the ground, and be resistant
to cutting. Inverted-U racks are the most common because they are intuitive to users, and the
installation cost is low. Post-and-Ring racks are also popular, although less intuitive, they can be
used to repurpose parking meter posts. Inverted-U racks can also come in a series of three or four
racks attached at the foot.

Figure 6: Locking a bicycle

7.A. - Page 84 of 121
90
