13

On-Street Design Recommendations

Bicycle Racks
Bicycle racks provide short-term bicycle parking
conveniently located near the user’s destination in a
publicly visible area. The rack and parked bicycles
should not obstruct the pedestrian right-of-way and
stay clear of street furniture. The racks should provide
two points of contact with the bicycle frame to ensure
the bicycle stands upright. The rack should also allow
locking of the frame and at least one wheel with a U-
lock.

Table 3 – Bicycle Racks Performance Criteria
SECURITY
• The rack should be made of difficult-to-cut material such as steel or stainless
steel.
• The rack should have a closed loop, and the cross-section should be no larger
than 2” to allow for locking of the frame and at least one wheel with a U-lock.
SAFETY
• The rack’s highest point of contact is at least 2’8” off the ground to ensure the
bicycle is supported upright.
• The rack should be located in well-lit public spaces.
ACCESSIBILITY
• The design should be easily recognizable and intuitive to use without the need
for written instructions.
• The rack should be located near commercial areas and popular destinations
near building entrances.
• The rack can be perpendicular or parallel to the curb but should not obstruct
the pedestrian right-of-way.
• Racks should be available 24/7.
ACCOMMODATES
A VARIETY OF
BICYCLES AND
ATTACHMENTS
• The rack does not restrict the length, height, or width of bicycles, attachments,
or wheels.
• Ensure enough clearance around the rack from objects in the street
MANAGEMENT
• The city and businesses can work together to ensure racks are well-maintained.
• The city or site manager should ensure abandoned bicycles are removed from
racks.

7.A. - Page 85 of 121
91
